WHO & WHAT?
Chatgpt is among the hottest topics in technology today. “What is chatgpt? Who is chaptgpt? Where is Chatgpt? How does it work?” are all questions being asked by those who have internet access. Chatgpt is an acronym for “Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer ”. For those of us with average sized brains, that means that someone with an above average sized brain (OpenAI) created a technology designed to have basic human-like conversations with people.
Who exactly are these above average sized brains that created Chatgpt? OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research laboratory, claims ownership for the development of Chatgpt. OpenAI was founded in 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, Wojciech Zaremba, and John Schulman. The original goal was to develop a friendly AI that would benefit all of humanity. Chatgpt is no one trick pony. Through machine learning algorithms, it answers (almost) any question and provides information about any topic. The information is accessible over various platforms and is delivered in a familiar text messaging or instant messaging like exchange. Chatgpt is also available in English, Spanish, French, German, and new languages are being added regularly, making it universally accessible.
What, then, is Rosalyn AI? Rosalyn is an assessment monitoring company serving higher ed institutions, known for its proactive proctoring design. Chatgpt and Rosalyn share the same artificial intelligence bloodline, but differ in their overall functionality and target audience. In order to truly understand the familial relationship between Chatgpt and Rosalyn, we first must understand the differences between generative AI and analytical AI. Chatgpt is part of the generative AI line. Generative AI is designed to “generate”, hence the name, new content. New content might include images, text, or videos. The generative nature of Chatgpt is created through algorithms that pull from existing data. In contrast, analytical AI takes mass amounts of data and produces observations or analyses of the information collected.
Rosalyn was founded by Noor Akbari, an Afghanistan native who trail blazed the digital realm by creating the country’s first digital print shop. After selling the business and immigrating to the US, Akbari spear-headed various initiatives in language assessment, which spurred the realization that artificial intelligence could enhance the processes significantly.
Both generative and analytical AI are used in the education industry. For example, generative AI can be used to create new educational materials (lesson plans, worksheets, graphic organizers). Analytical AI might be used to identify and assess patterns or relationships in data, such as test results. Theoretically, the generation of these materials in real time will allow classroom teachers to be more fully engaged in direct instruction.
